The History of World Series Replica Rings in Baseball

When a team wins the World Series, its players are usually presented with massive world series champions rings. In the beginning, the participants received some sort of remembrance, but it was nothing compared to one of those massive rings.

In the early years of Major League Baseball, players were given pins or brooches. Winning players were occasionally given a pocket watch. Here are a few examples:

In 1894, 1895, and 1896, the Baltimore Orioles won the National League pennant three times. The ornamentation the players received for the first two wins was barely more than a tiny pin. When the squad threepeated, the players received a new pin, this one made of gold with inlaid jewels, one for each title.

The Boston Americans / Pilgrims, the first team to win the World Series, were presented with a pendant.

When the Chicago Cubs won their second World Series in a row in 1908, the first pocket watch appeared. The watch was complemented by a ruby-inlaid pin.

The first ring was awarded in 1914 when the Miracle Braves defeated the much-fancied Philadelphia Athletics.

In subsequent years, participants would get a necklace or a pin. In 1922, the New York Giants presented their players with rings.

When the New York Yankees won their first World Series in 1923, they gave every one of their players a pocket watch.

Over the next two years, a pin and a pendant were distributed.

Rings have been awarded since 1926 when the St. Louis Cardinals won their first title. But, in addition to the 1926 ring, the Cards received another pendant.

Although not every club did so, putting the club logo on the side of the ring was a typical practice. However, the Philadelphia Athletics had a novelty in 1930 when they placed the elephant emblem on top of the ring, which would not be repeated until 1974 when the Oakland Athletics placed the A’s logo on top of the ring.

The Athletics ring from 1930 was complemented by another pocket watch.

In the years thereafter, not every club has placed its insignia on top of the rings. Only the 1977 Yankees, 1979 Pirates, 1980 Phillies, 1983 Orioles, 1987 Twins, 1990 Reds, and 1992 and 1993 Blue Jays accomplished this.

However, since the Yankees’ World Series victory in 1996, all victors have placed their emblem on top of the ring.
