Pharmacy Support Worker Apprenticeship

The pharmacy support worker will work in all areas of pharmacy practice, including community pharmacies, hospitals, dispensing practices, and prisons. Learners undertaking this level 2 apprenticeship will learn new skills and knowledge regarding day-to-day pharmacy tasks. The apprentice will be trained to be a qualified dispenser and counter assistant when required, alongside developing knowledge and skills in many critical areas.

The course will involve live tutorials, video conferencing, recorded sessions, and self-directed study. With this course, the apprentice will learn on the job whilst under the guidance and supervision of a pharmacist or Pharmacy Technician who takes responsibility for the apprentice’s progress and development.

Once the apprenticeship has been completed, the learner will meet the apprenticeship standard at Level 2 and will undertake an independent End Point Assessment provided by Pearsons End Point Assessment Organisation. The course meets GPhC’s requirements for initial education and training for Pharmacy Support Workers and is accredited by GPhC.

Pharmacy Technician Apprenticeship

This is a Level 3 course and provides learners with opportunities in the workplace, such as accuracy checking and medicines reconciliation, under the supervision of qualified pharmacists. Apprentices will be known as Pre-Registration Trainee Pharmacy Technicians and be expected to comply with The General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) standards for pharmacy professionals.

Requirements for the learner

Trainees must work in their pharmacy practice for at least 14 minimum of 14 hours per week. Trainees must have GCSEs at A-C or 4-9 or equivalent in Maths and English and preferably GCSE’s A-C or 4-9 or equivalent in science.

How long does the course last?

Most learners complete this course in 24-30 months, however, in order to register with GPhC post qualification, all applicants to the GPhC register must: Provide evidence they have completed a minimum of two years of relevant work based experience in the UK under the supervision, direction or guidance of a pharmacist or pharmacy technician to whom the applicant was directly accountable for not less than 14 hours per week.
