Global manganese oxide market was estimated to be US$ 802.65 Mn in 2022 and is expected to reach US$ 1205.09 Mn by 2030 growing at a CAGR of 6.1% over the forecast period.. American Elements, Autlán, Citic dameng, Euro Manganese Inc., Fisher Scientific Company L.L.C., GOLDEN MILE GmbH, Merck KGaA, Mesa Minerals Limited, Nanoshel LLC, Reade International Corp., Sibelco, Tosoh Corporation, and TROPAG OSCAR H. RITTER NACHF. GMBH, among others.

The development of products across various industries has been a result owing to the growing competition across these verticals over the years. Chemicals and materials industry are observed to be one of the notable sectors with a rise in initiatives related to development and production. Manganese oxide has become a notable chemical for various users owing to the growing applications. The potential of growth for the applications related to the market offerings is observed to be high and is expected to contribute to the growth of the market over the near future.

The Synchrotron light from CLAESS and MISTRAL beamlines of ALBA Synchroton has primarily unveiled the central role of manganese in the limited cycle-life of lithium-ion batteries. The research and development team of ALBA Synchrotron, the Institute of Materials Science of Barcelona (ICMAB-CSIC), the University of Bologna and the Helmholtz Institute Ulm have analysed that the magnetic and electronic characteristics of manganese in a lithium-rich cathode material. The focus was on the first charge/discharge cycle. As manganese is generally considered inert upon the electrochemical process, has in-fact a primary role in the reduced cycle-life of this battery types. The application of manganese oxide [MnOx(s)] and granular activated carbon (GAC) media for the removal of caffeine and acetaminophen from water also helps the water treatment facilities, thus driving the growth of the overall industry. Organic contaminants represent a developing issue due to their effects on human health and the environment. Manganese oxides are effective for water treatment because of their ability to balance or mediate both adsorption and oxidation. Laboratory scale column experiments were performed using different combinations of commercial MnOx(s) and GAC for assessing the removal of caffeine and acetaminophen along with other contaminants, and the subsequent release of soluble Mn due to the reductive dissolution of MnOx(s).

The removal of acetaminophen was detected for all media combinations investigated. However, the removal of caffeine by adsorption only occurred in columns containing GAC media. There was less removal of caffeine in columns containing only MnOx(s) media. Manganese release occurred in columns containing MnOx(s) media, but concentrations were below the secondary drinking water standard of 50 μg L−1 set by the US Environmental Protection Agency. Soluble Mn released from a first process by MnOx(s) media column was removed through adsorption into the GAC media used in a second process. The results of this investigation are relevant for implementation of MnOx(s) and GAC media combinations as an effective treatment process to remove organic contaminants from water.

Synthetic manganese oxides with micro- and nano-structures are attracting attention due to their wide applications in different fields, such as catalysis, ion-sieves, rechargeable batteries, chemical sensing devices, magnetic devices, field-emission devices, hydrogen storage media and microelectronics. Micro-, meso- and nano-porous manganese oxides, as well as layered claylike manganese oxide nanomaterials are prepared via various routes. Electrochemical capacitors known as supercapacitors, are known to exhibit characteristics as promising energy storage devices owing to their high power energy density and long cycle performance in comparison to conventional dielectric capacitors. ECs are considered for different applications such as power sources for camera flash equipment, lasers, pulsed light generators, and as backup power source for computer memory. They also became of interest in hybrid electric vehicles as an auxiliary power source in combination with battery. ECs can provide the peak power in such hybrid systems when accelerating, and thus the batteries can be optimized primarily for higher energy density and better cycle-life. Due to its dynamic electrochemical performance, natural abundance and environmental compatibility, manganese oxide (MnO2) and especially, nanostructured manganese oxide is considered one of the most promising electrode materials for supercapacitor applications.

Owing to its natural abundance, low cost, eco-friendly nature and favourable electrochemical performance, the application of manganese oxide in the research domain has been increasing. The same has been reported in the recent past and is expected to continue a similar trend over the next eight years. Many kind of manganese oxides/PANI have been synthesized in recent years. Pan and coworkers synthesized nanometer tubular PANI using crystal-oxidative manganese oxides as a template that is dissolved in the reductive environment during synthesis. Manganese oxide is used as the physical template and the chemical oxidative initiator for the aniline polymerization. The template can be removed after the reaction, as manganese oxide is reduced into soluble Mn2+ ions. Much morphology of PANI structures, such as nanotubes, spherical tube brushes, and double-shell nanotubes can be fabricated using the concerned method.
