The process of visualizing and communicating data can be cumbersome if you don’t have the right tools on hand. Nested Shapes
It’s always been possible to nest shapes, but in Microsoft Visio 2019, you can now nest any shape that supports linking. You’ll have to draw your original object with a thin border and then use a drawing tool to choose it. For example, if you want to nest a basic rectangle inside of another rectangle, start by drawing one of those rectangles and then select it. Next, hold down CTRL and click on its handle until it turns blue and becomes editable. If your nested object has other shapes within it or is itself nested inside another shape, they will be selected as well.
Conditional Formatting
Overlapping shapes and objects that are connected can create hard-to-read diagrams, especially when they’re overlapping more than one another. Conditional formatting lets you apply color to a shape or object based on how many shapes are overlapping it, making your diagram easier to read. Just as you can use conditional formatting in Word and Excel, you can also use it with shapes and connectors in Visio—anywhere you want to apply visual cues based on context. You could use it for things like highlighting a section of your plan to show progress or importance, warning others about certain tasks or projects that require special attention, or even just adding some fun flair to otherwise bland diagrams.
Layers
This addition makes it easier for Visio users to build and maintain more complex diagrams. Whether you’re adding tasks and subtasks or creating a network map, these new layers help keep your diagram organized without cluttering it up. Layers are also very useful when working with large diagrams; you can use them to hide detail on a layer so that it’s hidden while you work on other elements of your drawing but will still be visible later. If there’s only one feature in Microsoft Visio 2019that you should try out, let it be layers. It’s certainly worth learning to use them because they can greatly improve how quickly and easily you can build visual models of all kinds.
