The various types of leaf springs that you should know about

Every vehicle depends on its suspension system to move smoothly on the roads. Both the front and the rear suspension systems must operate properly if the vehicle is to run efficiently. The main tools that help improve the road performance of the vehicles are leaf springs.

The leaf springs provide adequate support and flexibility to the vehicle’s suspension system so that it can operate the way supposed to. Without the leaf springs, it would be impossible for heavy vehicles to function the way they do. There are many different types of leaf springs nowadays used for heavy vehicles. So, let’s have a look at some of them.

The most widely used variant of leaf springs is the multi-leaf springs. These leaf springs comprise more than a single leaf or metal plate. The leaves are placed one above the other, and the largest leaf is at the top. These multi-leaf springs can provide maximum robustness of the spring. They provide enhanced carrying capacity for the suspension system.

Another type of leaf spring you come across is the mono leaf spring. The mono leaf springs are created with a single piece of metal. These leaf springs are typically thick at the centre, and they become narrowly close to the edges. These leaf springs are used on lightweight vehicles.

The other two variants of leaf springs that you will come across are the semi-elliptical leaf springs and the quarter-elliptical leaf springs. The semi-elliptical leaf springs are characterized by the presence of several leaves of varying strengths, but they all have the same width. The longest leaf placed at the top is referred to as the master leaf. The quarter-elliptical leaf springs are also referred to as cantilever leaf springs and have a simple construction that makes them easy to use.
