Looking at the people’s opinions and reviews online, it can be said that it is not just an immigrant’s story anymore, but a story of loss and hope and tells a tale of fighting back after losing the battle once.
According to the book, the author reached the USA with just 8 dollars in his pocket and no dream in mind. He came here to get additional training in endocrinology and return home within 3-5 years. Back then, he was unaware of the concept of “An American Dream.” Anyways, being a foreign medical doctor, he had to struggle a lot in the USA to get a fellowship in Endocrinology and his license to practice medicine. He already had his basic, as well as an advanced medical degree and was a well- trained internist. But unfortunately, the degrees and skills were not recognized by the American medical establishment. So, he had to go through the residency training all over again, along with the additional training in Endocrinology Thus, he finally became a board certified endocrinologist and a licensed physician.
The book depicts the story of his major loss in life- the loss of his spouse. Ved’s wife, Dr. Veena Virmani Gossain, to whom the book is dedicated, was also a physician. She took her last breath during the early stages of Ved’s career, which was a major setback in his life. Anyways, he did not succumb to sadness and despair throughout his life. Instead, he put his life back together. Finally, he overcame the loss and he had a highly successful academic career at Michigan State University, a major American university. As he said, “If success is measured by professional success or monetary success, I have achieved the “American Dream.”
Every immigrant’s story is unique in its own way. Although very common, the struggles differ in terms of people’s ways of dealing with them.
