This story revolves around John Brown, the charismatic, historical figure who was determined to end, what he called, the sin of slavery. His unsuccessful raid on the federal armory at Harpers Ferry was an attempt to acquire weapons that would be used to free enslaved people as they escaped bondage. In his eyes, his Christian beliefs demanded that he take action to free those who were being held against their will.

Brown’s guiding philosophy was, “Therefore all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them.” Bible. Matthew 7:12, KJ version. He reaffirmed that belief in a speech that he gave during his trial. Is Brown’s view of the world still relevant as the country still struggles with the legacy of slavery?

Most books portray John Brown as a domestic terrorist who incited a slave rebellion. On the other hand, some think of him as a prophet because he warned the country that if it did not settle the question of slavery, a civil war would be the outcome. Brown was hanged in 1859, and the American Civil War started 16 months later.

Starks took a different approach to helping the reader understand John Brown by looking at his actions through his mind. Archives of the states of Virginia and West Virginia provided invaluable historical references for the book. However, it is up to each reader to determine for himself or herself if Brown was a domestic terrorist or a prophet.

Readers of the book indicated that Starks should be recognized for this insightful publication. In addition, they stated they were looking forward to enjoying more classics like The Last Days of John Brown, the Abolitionist.

Along with being a writer, Dr. Doris N. Starks is a retired nursing education leader. Her last appointment was that of Dean and Professor of Nursing at Coppin State University in Baltimore. At the same institution, she was the Founding Director of the Community Health Center, which was made possible through funding of a grant written by Dr. Starks and submitted to the U.S. Public Health Service.
