Author and historian Harold Skaarup is well-known for his illustrated books on military history. This retired veteran of the Canadian Forces latest book is his first in a bi-lingual French-English format. Canon au Canada, Province par Province, Tome 6: Québec/ Cannon in Canada, Province by Province, Volume 6: Quebec, will soon be available on Amazon.
People with interest in Military history have been collecting former Honorary Lieutenant-Colonel Skaarup’s books on classic cannon that have been served by detachments of gunners throughout Canada’s extraordinary history. Previous volumes have covered cannon presently preserved in the provinces of New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia, Newfoundland and Labrador, and British Columbia, with the cannon in Quebec being number 6. Harold intends to complete the series with books on Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, the Yukon, Northwest Territories, and Nunavut. He also maintains web pages on historic cannon preserved in the New England states, Ireland, Portugal, and Mexico. Many of these cannons were featured in his book Siegecraft II, also published by Global Summit House. The books are designed to be used as a portable reference guide to find and examine the many artillery-centric artefacts of importance to Canada’s story, particularly in Quebec. Cannon in Canada, Province by Province, Volume 6: Quebec aims to fill the gap in many of the untold stories of Quebec.
Since the military person-turned-into-author started writing history books, gunnery enthusiasts and military history-minded people have enjoyed the books wholeheartedly. Many of his books are available on Amazon and easily accessible online.
According to the readers, the books are interesting and informative. Harold volunteers at two museums in New Brunswick as a tour guide and docent. When speaking about his background, Harold includes a few of his first-hand experiences as a Military officer now retired from the Canadian Army. He served as an intelligence officer; a career that gave him exceptional opportunities work in interesting parts of the world. He had been on duty with NATO in Germany, the UN in Cyprus, with SFOR in Bosnia-Herzegovina, with NORAD in Colorado, with ISAF in Afghanistan, and of course at home in Canada.
During the 40 years of his professional career as a military officer, he had the privilege of taking part in history-making events. He enjoyed taking part in promoting the Canadian Army as a member of the Canadian Forces Parachute Team “The Sky Hawks” for a few years. Consequently, he had developed significant insights into the military history of Canadian soldiers. Along with his colleagues, he had the opportunity to observe and learn about the soldiers, sailors, airmen, and women who have created and are continuing to make history in the Canadian Forces. He gained a certain amount of insight into the service members he served with and allied servicemembers and women from many other countries in multi-national cooperative teams. He notes that he developed an interest in history when his RCAF father took him and his family exploring medieval castles in Germany in the early 1960s. Harold retired from the Canadian Army in August 2011. Shortly afterward, he began volunteering at the New Brunswick Military History Museum (NBMHM), cataloguing and documenting the large collection of firearms and military memorabilia and taking students, seniors, and other visitors on tours of the museums’ extensive history collection. The museum is one of the two located on the 5th Canadian Division Support Base (5 CDSB) in Gagetown, New Brunswick. He is also the President of the York Sunbury History Society governing the Fredericton Region Museum, where he also serves as a volunteer researcher and tour guide.
In his early years, he earned a Bachelor’s degree in Fine Art at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design. Many years later, while serving in the Army, he earned his Master’s degree in War Studies through the Royal Military College of Canada. He fully supports life-long learning for people of all ages.
Harold maintains a considerable Canadian military history data bank on his website “SilverHawkAuthor.com.” He has mentioned how he continues to learn a great deal about much of Canada’s untold military history, and as he discovers data, photos, and memorabilia not seen by many, he adds the information to his website so that others can enjoy it as well. He plans to incorporate some of these discoveries in future books. While doing his collective research, he notes, “In the process, I have met some wonderful people and heard many of their stories, fielded questions from a myriad of visitors, and continue to learn something new about our history every day.”
Just like his extraordinary professional career, he enjoys the broad experience of being an author. He has authored multiple books about his grandfathers and their experiences in the First World War, titled Whiz Bangs & Woolly Bears: Walter Ray Estabrooks & the Great War. Harold is an Associate RCAF Historian and has written a considerable number of books on Aviation museums, including Canadian Warplanes and Axis Warplane Survivors. He has written about Canadian tanks and Armoured Fighting Vehicles as well Canadian artillery, including Shelldrake: Canadian Artillery Museums and Gun Monuments, and one book on questions about UFOs. A wide range of interested readers enjoys his military history books, and all the books are well-rated on Amazon.
Harold has become a popular author, writing about the life and history of military forces. Now, with his first bilingual military history book, Canon au Canada, Province par Province, Tome 6: Québec/ Cannon in Canada, Province by Province, Volume 6: Quebec, he is about to take a step ahead towards completing a considerable collection of artillery reference works for the military history enthusiast.
