Clarity Surgical in Huntington is ushering the new surgical revolution: robotics assisted surgery.
Long Island, NY – USA | December 07, 2020 — Surgery has traditionally been performed with small instruments and the steady hand of a surgeon.
In the latter half of the 20th century, laparoscopy was invented, making surgical procedures require much smaller incisions and lowering recovery time. The procedures themselves became easier to do, reducing overall risk of complications, increasing the speed at which the procedures could be performed, and ultimately lowering the cost of surgery for the patient.
Now, a surgical center in Huntington is ushering the new surgical revolution: robotics assisted surgery.
Clarity Surgical is a surgical weight loss center specializing in providing weight loss surgery to residents of the tri-state area. They provide a wide array of surgical procedures, including the gastric bypass, the gastric sleeve, and laparoscopic conversion surgeries.
Recently, Clarity Surgical hired Dr. Owen Pyke Jr., a trained bariatric and general surgeon. With Dr. Pyke comes a level of robotic surgery expertise that Clarity Surgical is starting to take advantage of.
Under the guidance of Drs. Colin Braithwaite and Jun Levine, Dr. Pyke did his fellowship at NYU Winthrop Hospital training in Minimally Invasive, Bariatric, and Robotic surgery.
“When we hired Dr. Pyke, we took everything into consideration. One notable factor was his experience and training in robotic surgery,” said Jessica Reyes, director of operations at Clarity Surgical. “We knew that we wanted to include robotic surgery as part of our operations here at Clarity Surgical, but before we hired Dr. Pyke we didn’t have the resources to do so.”
What kind of advantages does robotic surgery bring? Currently, the allure of robotics is in its potential to make difficult surgeries safer, more effective, less risky, and easier for the surgeon to perform.
“Right now, robotics assisted surgery is still in its infancy,” says Reyes. “Robotic surgical procedures have been available for well over a decade and they’re just now starting to gain wider acceptance and use in hospitals all over the world. One thing is clear, though: robotic surgery IS the future.”
For those who are concerned that their surgery is performed solely by a robot, no need to fret. The surgical robot is controlled entirely by the surgeon. Its purpose is to assist surgeons with technically difficult maneuvers and give them the ability to be much more precise when using their instruments.
