Sunita’s plants perished as she had not prepared and packed them properly. Even if you hire a professional packer and mover to help you in packing and shifting but still you need to take care of your plants separately. Here, are a few tips to help you take care of your plants while you are planning to move.

Check for regulations and restrictions

Have you checked with your new house owners if they will allow plants in their home? If yes, then you are in luck. Some landowners don’t allow tenants to keep plants at home. You should also check if the plants you have are good for transporting to long distances. Check for manual guide of the plants if you have any or check them online on how to pack and move those plants.

Repotting and transplanting

Make a selection of all the plants that you may want to carry off to new place. Once the decision is made, now it’s time to find how you are going to transplant them. Some of the sturdy plants may not need any kind of packing but the fragile ones are a different matter. For those you can use a sterile and clean plastic pot if you are traveling a short distance. Remove those plants at least 3 weeks before you move. Giving them this grace period will allow them to settle in the new pot easily and won’t kill the plant once they are moved.

Separate then wrap

Repotting can be your best approach to move small seedlings and houseplants but for a complete garden you may have to follow a different approach. Surround the plant’s roots with ample amount of soil. This will help lock moisture with a little bit of water added to it. Once this is done wrap the base part using a plastic bag. You can also cover the opening around the stem. Ensure you make enough holes on the bag for the plant to breathe.

Once this is done place the plants carefully inside the boxes insulated by the bubble wrap.

Transportation

Packing is done but what about transporting them. If you are transporting them yourself, try to maintain the temperature and keep the speed stable. You can send these plants through the packers and movers in the city to transport the plants carefully.

Once you reach your destination, wait for at least 2 weeks before repotting the plant. It is better to check the soil, temperature, and weather to check if the plant would survive in that environment or not. When you are hiring professional moving company to move your household items, ask them if they cover damage to the plants. If you are shifting during winter season, then don’t water the plants too much or the plants may die due to frost in the roots.
