How to get BIS Certificate?

BIS certificate is a recognized document issued by Bureau of Indian Standards having R-Number to be imprinted on the product of the manufacturer who is producing a quality product. In India, approximately 70 products are there which are compulsory for BIS Registration before selling. BIS Certificate is offered in mainly two cases:

What are the necessary documents required to apply for a BIS certificate?

  • Factory Documents i.e. copy of partnership deed or certificate from CA in case of a sole proprietorship.
  • Self-certified copy of GST registration or insurance policy or electricity bill, or rent agreement, etc. for authentication (the firm is not older than 3 months).

What are the different types of BIS certification schemes?

These are some of the schemes you can register your product and get a BIS certificate.

Tatkal Scheme– This method is used to get BIS certification in Tatkal Scheme. If you are going to enroll in this scheme then, you will get your certificate in under thirty days, because it comes up with tight guidelines.

Foreign Manufacturers Certification Scheme– In the year 2000 FMCG (Foreign manufacturer certification scheme) was launched by BIS (Bureau of Indian Standard). In this, the foreign manufacturer opens a branch office or nominates an agent to apply for a BIS Certificate. Rest the process and documents required are the same to apply for BIS certification.

Simplified procedure for Domestic Manufacturer– This process is totally like its name. Applicant submits the sample of the product with its test report. After following the protocols, if BIS officials find it satisfactory then they offer the certificate to the applicant. You will get the BIS certificate within thirty days.

Normal Procedure for Domestic Manufacturers– Under this method the manufacturer applies with prescribed documents and fees. After that BIS officials visit your factory and collect random samples for testing. If your product passes then you will get the BIS certificate for your product. The time duration is between four to six months.

What is the validity time for BIS Certificate?

In the case of ISI Mark Certification, the validity is 1 year after that you have to renew your registration. If you fail to renew your BIS Certificate, then your product certification will be canceled and you have to apply as a new applicant for your product certification.
