With a name inspired by a David Bowie song, you know that Rebel Rebel Wine Bar is bound to be a cool joint. “A wine bar with a rebellious streak; a mutiny in every glass”, is how Rebel Rebel describes itself on its website. We don’t know if you’ll experience a mutiny as you sip your wine, but we do know that their dining options are darn affordable.
For a meal for two, we recommend the Fried Fish Sandwich Set. ($75) This set comes with two Fried Fish Sandwiches, a Caesar salad, a side of fries, and a free Rebel Rebel Wine Bag. Located in ABC Brickworks Market, Wow Wow West is not just a food stall, but is actually where current co-owner Jayden met his soon-to-be wife. Long story short, Jayden (who was a regular customer of the store) met then-owner Elizabeth and the rest was history. The pair wed in 2012 and have been running the stall – dedicated to good Western food – together since.
We love the Fish & Chips ($8), a surprisingly huge fillet of deep-fried fish battered in crispy panko and served with a steaming pile of fries, baked beans, refreshing coleslaw, and a generous portion of homemade mayonnaise sauce.

Located right in the heart of Maxwell is Ye Lai Xiang, a lesser-known outlet dishing out Hainanese-style Western food in Singapore. This East and West fusion sees menu creations like their Chicken Cutlet ($8), a palm-sized slab of fried chicken paired with a side of steamed mixed vegetables, crinkle-cut fries, and a fluffy bun.
