Awl-Techniek Relies on NVIDIA for Efficient Expansion of Desktop Virtualization

3D animation has several applications in the manufacturing industry. A significant upgrade over 2D drawings, 3D modeling was widely used in the aeronautical space before expanding to other manufacturing verticals such as automotive, consumer goods, and medical machinery. Manufacturing professionals deploy 3D modeling tools to communicate product specifications and other critical information.

NVIDIA Corporation is a globally-recognized technology powerhouse that is best-known for its graphics processing units (GPUs). NVIDIA’s platform solutions cater to four markets: gaming, data centers, auto, and professional visualization. On the 360Quadrants platform, experts have evaluated NVIDIA and recognized its noteworthy portfolio of 3D animation in manufacturing solutions. This, coupled with its extensive consortium of channel partners, has earned NVIDIA a position as a dynamic differentiator on 360Quadrants.

AWL-Techniek is a market leader in manufacturing high-tech welding machines. Its engineers have innovative designs for high-end robotization, machine automation, and joining technologies for international automotive suppliers. As AWL expanded in various markets, its leaders began looking for solutions to overcome several IT hurdles to maximize efficiency and improve global collaboration. A solution presented itself during the merger of AWL with MechDes, a firm specializing in 3D SOLIDWORKS design. MechDes was leveraging Citrix and NVIDIA to optimize file sharing and high-performance graphics. MechDes discovered that Citrix was the only supplier of NVIDIA virtual GPUs that provided cutting-edge 3D graphics performance, and thus chose NVIDIA for its advanced and flexible infrastructure. After the merger, AWL created a high-performance virtualized environment using NVIDIA’s GRID K2 and Tesla M60 GPU cards.

AWL-Techniek went on to deploy NVIDIA Quadro vDWS as a part of its operations and soon managed to nearly double its mechanics and engineering staff without needing any additional IT support. NVIDIA Quadro vDWS provides unmatched 3D rendering capacity and speed, thus giving AWL engineers the ability to work more efficiently. Engineers were also able to collaborate on 3D graphics files in Siemens PLM NX, ANSYS, Dassault Systèmes CATIA, Siemens Process Simulate, and SOLIDWORKS. NVIDIA Quadro vDWS enables mechanics to view updated eDrawings files at any AWL facility without problems of data synchronization. Through NVIDIA, opening the PLM Viewer and browsing projects, as well as rotating models in SOLIDWORKS, became much more fluid and swifter. AWL engineers also leveraged CPU offloading for a high-quality video conferencing experience; particularly important because it is common for engineers located in the Netherlands to share their screens with Chinese engineers.
