Evil West is a third-person shooter that might be hard to get used to at first. These tips should help people who are new find their way.
Evil West reminds me of the not-so-good games from the PS2 era. It’s not a home run, but it’s fun and gives players a different way to look at things. In 2022, how many games about hunting vampires take place in the Old West?
It should be clear what to do. Players take on the role of Jesse Rentier, a monster hunter in Evil West who has to keep his group from falling apart. Players will have a lot to work with, from guns to powers like superpowers. Here are some ways to make these vampire monsters wish they didn’t exist.
Play Up The Difficulties
There are four levels of difficulty, ranging from easy to so hard that it hurts. As is typical for action and third-person shooter games, players can change these settings at any time from the menu. There is an option called “True Death” that you should choose from the beginning, though.
This means that if someone dies, the game is over for good. That is the hardest part of Evil West, and you shouldn’t do it until you’ve played it at least once. If you try it the first time, you’ll almost certainly have a bad time.
Adjust The HUD
In this game, the HUD is not too big, but it could use some tweaking. It goes away when you’re not in battle, which is nice for people who like games with simple views. Players can reduce the size of the HUD by 50%, or they can also choose to make it bigger.
Though, since monsters are always coming at the player, it might be a good idea to make the HUD smaller, since the screen can get very crowded. It’s too bad that you can’t turn off the HUD completely while in battle, like you can in God of War Ragnarok, another action game that came out recently.
Explore Thoroughly
Evil West has no kind of map that goes against the way upgrades work. When a player kills a monster, they get experience points. In RPGs and other games with similar elements, a player’s character will level up and get skill points the more enemies they kill. You can get gold in levels that let you improve your weapons.
Without a map or mini-map, it can be hard to tell which way leads to the goal and which way leads to a side goal. For now, until a map system is hopefully patched in, try to explore as much as possible and use your gut to figure out which paths lead to main and side goals.
Upgrade Suggestions
In action RPGs, it’s always a good idea to save upgrades until something important comes up, whether the upgrades are based on levels or money. Both upgrade trees will get new paths as you level up, learn more about the story, and find hidden treasures. When a crazy cool ability like Blaster unlocks and you don’t have any money, it’s not a good thing.
By the way, Blaster gives the standard bullets of the revolver electricity. At $5000, the price is high, so it may be hard to reach that goal at $0. The main piece of advice is to buy upgrades as you progress and always keep one in the chamber.
Use Your Environment
During their adventure, players will get a lot of weapons. They start with a basic glove for close combat, then get a revolver, a rifle, an electric upgrade for the glove, a shotgun, and so on. It’s the usual gear you’d find in an Old West game, but it’s been upgraded with some steampunk features.
The more players unlock, the easier it will be to deal with the huge number of enemies. Make good use of the environment before you get a lot of weapons. Lure enemies to TNT reserves, then blow them up, or punch zombies into cages with barbed wire.
Countering With The Rifle
Like most action RPGs, Evil West has cooldowns for all weapons and general powers. It’s great that guns don’t need bullets, but this has a downside. For example, the rifle is a great way to fight enemies who use a ring on their body to send a counter signal.
Most bosses make a ring when they are about to attack or regain their health. If the rifle runs out of bullets, it could set players back, especially if the boss heals like those big vampire bats. That’s why it’s important to only use the rifle to counter during boss fights. In a similar vein, using the electric glove upgrade mentioned above is a good way to fight normal enemies in the field. Overall, the best way to attack in this game is to counter.
Pay Attention To Autosaves
It’s hard to say how checkpoints in games work because each one is different. Cuphead has one of the best parts, which is sure to be praised by most people. If a player finishes a mission and wants to go back to the main menu, the game will tell them when it last saved automatically.
Several seconds means that it just saved. If it’s a few minutes then it might be best to move forward and wait for that save icon to appear. The icon can be hard to see, especially if players follow the advice from the last tip and make the HUD smaller. Just remember that you can quit a mission in the middle of it. Just make sure to pay attention to the autosave alerts. No one wants to go back to a shooter or action game after a break and have to do the last part all over again.
Evil West was released on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X on November 22, 2022.
